I want to change this world, but I know I can’t. And neither can Modi. No doubt, he is one of the most powerful people on earth. Through demonetization—sucking out 86 percent of the currency and bringing the economy to a halt—he has done what others can’t even dare to think. And he is the man who has changed the course of Indian history by abrogating Article 370 of the Indian Constitution. But changing social trends is altogether a different story. For instance, here’s a list of a few ongoing social trends and reversing them seems nigh impossible because these are now a part of our DNA:
Changing Social Trends
- The dimming inner lights and the glowing outside world
- The declining self-worth and the rising net worth
- The rarity of boredom and the ubiquity of busyness
- The declining face time and the increasing time on Facebook
- The fading human memory and the expanding Google Maps
- The dying individualism and the rising crowd behavior
- The declining playfulness in kids and the rising over-seriousness in adults
- The lowering of contentment and the rising perfectionism
- The shortening attention span and the rising fascination with multi-tasking
- The declining spirituality and the rising materialism
- The dying subtle art of slow living and the emerging modern age of fast living
- The decline of simplicity and the growing trappings of modernity
- The fading sounds of silence and the rising cacophony of noise
- The emptying of monasteries and the booming adventure tourism on Mount Everest
- The dying innocence of the heart and the rising cleverness of the mind
- The loss of human dignity and the rising substance abuse
- The waning pursuit of solitude and growing fear of loneliness
- The declining sleep time and the rising screen time
- The vanishing playgrounds and the mushrooming coaching centers
- The undernourishment of the poor and the over-nourishment of the rich
- The decreasing sportsman spirit and the increasing commercialization of sports
- The declining education and the soaring marks
- The losing art of listening and the rising art of winning arguments
- The falling numbers of atheist and the increasing idolization of celebrities
- The weakening emotional intelligence and the rising craving for dopamine
And, the list of current social trends goes on and on. But now that Modi has got absolute majority in the Lok Sabha, why can’t he make a difference? Simply because like anyone of us he is also a human and human is a human is a human. Leave aside Modi, even god is feeling helpless!
